Consequences of Interstellar Absorption for Models of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars

چکیده
We examine properties of thermal radiation emitted by strongly magnetized neutron stars (NSs). In particular, we show that the pulsation amplitudes of the energy-integrated flux are an increasing function of the absorption column density to the source. This is especially important for the interpretation of the Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) as cooling neutron stars with high magnetic fields. We show that the high-pulsation amplitudes observed in these objects are consistent with cooling models, if the large amount of absorption to these sources is taken into account. We also show that cooling models imply inferred radii of the emitting regions on the order of ∼ 5− 6 times smaller than the actual NS radii, again in agreement with observations. Extinction Columns and Intrinsic X-ray Spectra of the Anomalous X-ray Pulsars
The X-ray spectra of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars have long been fit by smooth, empirical models such as the sum of a black-body plus a power law. These reproduce the ∼ 0.5 to 10 keV range well, but fail at lower and higher energies, grossly over-predicting the optical and under-predicting the hard X-ray emission. A poorly constrained source of uncertainty in determining the true, intrinsic spectra,...
متن کاملNature vs. Nurture: The Origin of Soft Gamma–ray Repeaters and Anomalous X–ray Pulsars
Soft gamma–ray repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous x–ray pulsars (AXPs) are young and radio-quiet x-ray pulsars which have been rapidly spun-down to slow spin periods clustered in the range 5− 12 s. Most of these unusual pulsars also appear to be associated with supernova shell remnants (SNRs) with typical ages < 30 kyr. By examining the sizes of these remnants versus their ages, we demonstrate that...
متن کاملNature of the Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars
I summarize recent developments in the magnetar model of the Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars, give a critical inventory of alternative models for the AXPs, and outline the improved diagnostics expected from present observational efforts.
متن کاملProbing Spatial Distribution of Interstellar Dust Medium by High Angular Resolution X-ray Dust Scattering Halos of X-ray Point Sources
We have studied the X-ray dust scattering halos around 17 bright X-ray point sources using Chandra data. All sources were observed with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer and High-Energy Transmission Grating in Continuous Clocking Mode (CC-mode) or Timed Exposure Mode (TE-mode). We use an iterative method to resolve the halos at small scattering angles from the zeroth order data in CC-mode o...
متن کاملA Glitch in an Anomalous X-ray Pulsar
We report the detection of a sudden spin-up of the 11 s anomalous X-ray pulsar 1RXS J170849.0−4000910 in regular timing observations made with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. The event, which occurred between MJD 51446 (1999 September 25) and 51472 (1999 October 21), is well characterized by an increase in the rotational frequency of magnitude |∆ν/ν| = (6.2±0.3)×10−7 and an increase in the rat...
